Is FIFO Work The Right Fit For Me?

FIFO work is a very specific lifestyle that is not for everyone. However, it is an extremely rewarding and worthwhile way to work for those who are suited to it and at a point in their lives where they can commit to it. There are factors to consider when deciding whether or not FIFO work is right for you and your lifestyle and it is important to do your research and speak with those who have experience in this lifestyle before making any decisions.

Before committing to FIFO work, consider the following:

Do I enjoy working long hours?

FIFO workers are often required to work long hours, sometimes 12 hours or more per day. Depending on the industry and your specific role within the job site or organisation you work for, you may be required to work long hours regularly during the week or fortnight that
you are stationed, so be prepared for long days!

Am I comfortable being away from home for extended periods?

FIFO work often requires workers to be away from home for extended periods, sometimes for weeks at a time. This can be difficult to adjust to, especially if you have young children or other family members that would miss you while you’re gone. The flip-side of this, however, is that you get to spend a lot of time with them on your time off. If you are
considering FIFO work, make sure you are comfortable with the idea of being away from home for long periods.

Do I mind living in remote or rural areas?

Fly-in, fly-out jobs are located mainly in remote or rural areas, as are many mines and other industrial sites. This means that if you want to pursue FIFO work, you will most likely have to be stationed in a remote area. These areas are often quite different from major cities, so consider whether you would be comfortable living in a remote area. If you enjoy peace and quiet, you will likely come to enjoy this aspect of the FIFO lifestyle.

Am I physically fit enough to handle the demands of FIFO work?

Another factor to consider is whether you are physically fit enough to handle the demands of FIFO work. This type of employment often requires long hours and can be quite taxing on your body. It is important to make sure that you are up for the challenge before committing to a FIFO job.

Am I mentally fit enough to handle the demands of FIFO work?

To handle the demands of FIFO work, you should be physically as well as mentally fit. This type of work can be emotionally draining due to long hours, being away from home and loved ones, and navigating the social network of your new work crew. Before committing to
a FIFO job, make sure you are mentally prepared for the challenges you may face.

If you answered yes to most of these questions, then the FIFO lifestyle will be a good fit for you! There are many benefits to working in this type of job, so don’t let the challenges scare you away.
